This page contains technical advice about using the BPMA wiki. To understand the philosophy behind the BPMA Wiki, read about why we created the Wiki

What is a Wiki?

This site is an example of a wiki - a kind of collaborative website. (wiki wiki means quick in Hawaiian.) It is running Zwiki, a particular kind of wiki software.

Wikis try to make it as simple as possible to write and share useful content. Anyone can edit, add comments, and make new pages on the spot. It is often possible to upload files and pictures and get email notifications as well.

How do I navigate around the Wiki?

Each page in a wiki has a unique name, often a WikiName? - two or more capitalized words joined together. Free-form names, which can be any word or phrase, may also be used. A page name automatically links to that page. ZWiki:RemoteWikiLinks - two wikinames joined by a colon - are links to other sites. You'll also see standard HTML links and URL links.

You can see recently edited wiki pages listed on the right, and by clicking the 'Ever' button, you can see every page ever created on the Wiki.

How do I edit a page?

  • Click 'edit' to change the page's text.
  • In the 'edit' view, you will see a toolbar of familiar tools e.g. bold, italics, indent and outdent. Highlight text then click to apply a tool.
  • You can also tick a box below the edit pane to view the HTML markup, and edit that way if you prefer.
  • Add a quick comment ('optional change note') using the field at the bottom of the edit page, to let other users know what you have done.

Can I copy text from another application?

You can, but we suggest that you copy the text into a text-only program such as Word Pad before copying it into the Wiki. Formatting from programs such as Microsoft Word can cause problems when they are copied into the Wiki.

How do I format text?

The easiest way to format your text is by using the tool bar that appears when you click 'edit this page'. However, you can format your text by using page markups in the HTML.

How do I insert a link?

You can insert a link to another page within the Wiki or an external link to a page within the rest of the BPMA website or to another site. You can also link to a page that does not yet exist and then use the link to create it.

  • Click on the toolbar icon that shows a symbol of the earth (the alt-text should say 'Insert link:' when you hold your mouse over the correct button).
  • Enter the URL (web address) of the page you would like to link to (NB it is a good idea to have the page you would like to link to open in a separate tab/window. Then you can just copy (ctrl+c) the URL from that page and paste (ctrl+v) it into the 'Insert link' window.
  • NB make sure you include the 'http://' part at the start of the address

How do I insert an image?

  • Click on the toolbar icon that shows a symbol of a tree (the alt-text should say 'Insert Image' when you hold your mouse over the correct button).
  • Click the Browse button to locate the image on your computer
  • Add a short description of the image here e.g. 'Image of a letter box in Bognor Regis' (NB this will form the alt-text of the image and so needs to be a good description so that users with visual impairments will be able to identify it with their screenreader technology
  • Click 'Upload'
  • The page will save automatically once you click the 'Upload' button and the image will appear at the bottom of the page
  • If you want to move your image, click the 'Edit this page' button again, click on the image, press ctrl+x on your keyboard (or go to 'Edit' and choose 'Cut') , and then move your cursor to the position you want the image to appear in, and press ctrl+v on your keyboard (or go to 'Edit' and choose 'Paste')
  • Please ensure that your image is no more than 500 pixels wide, and is less than 1MB in filesize or else it will not display
  • Please ensure that you only upload images that are your copyright

How do I create a new page?

You can either use the 'Create new page' button on the right hand side of this page, or you can link to a page that does not yet exist using the method described above

How do I subscribe to a page?

If you see a 'subscribe' link, you can subscribe to receive comments, or all edits, by mail. You can choose to receive mail just from that page or from the whole wiki. NB the 'Subscribe to his page' function only appears when you edit an existing page.

  1. Click 'subscribe'
  2. If needed, enter your email address and click 'Change'
  3. Click the button to toggle your page or wiki subscription status (green means you are subscribed).
