New Postal Museum
An independent educational charity, the British Postal Museum & Archive has worked to ensure the widest possible access to its unparalleled Museum Collection and the outstanding Royal Mail Archive since 2004. Constrained by its current building, limited exhibition and education space and an archive repository at permanent risk of flooding, the BPMA is fundraising to build a new, national museum in Central London.
Due to open in 2016, The Postal Museum will bring together the Archive and Museum Collections for the first time and create a living heritage space at the heart of a diverse community. It will provide vital space to grow, allow the BPMA to reach new audiences, significantly increase its educational offer and preserve the important history of British postal services – a national icon – for generations to come.
The full project is expected to attract 180,000 visitors a year and will reveal the extraordinary stories of one of our most familiar services. Visitors will also be taken on a journey to discover one of Britain’s most remarkable engineering feats – London’s 100 year old underground postal railway system, the Mail Rail.
In building this museum, the BPMA will fundamentally change the way it works with its collections and the ways in which it engages with its audiences. Sustainable access to its collections will provide visitors with a strong understanding of their personal and collective heritage through nearly 400 years of Britain’s social, design and communication history.
