Actually my time with the POSB was after the war.  During the war I worked in a sub postoffice in Mitcham,Surrey.  It was situated in a chemist shop, called the Gardeners (?).  I was just 14 when I went to work there and shortly was able to run the PO entirely alone.   ( A  fact that stood me in good stead when we moved to the US in 1949)  Banking became my profession then.

The owners were very good to me and  gave me first pick of anything, cosmetic wise, that was delivered to them. I was also able to get my sanitary supplies too from them. Would that be considered Black market?   I hope not.........................

I eventually moved to Hammersmith and ended up working in the POSB department in Kensington (?).  I remember, very vividly, that the employees sat around a long table and we were given piles of POSB books to add interest and bring up to date. These books would arrive on a daily basis in great sacks. They had been handed in for updating at various PO's all over Britain. All figuring was done by hand.....no adding machines.      I loved the job and when we emigrated it was sad in a way.

I wonder if any one else can remember this particular function of the POSB.
