Post Office in Pictures and the BPMA Photography collection
28 May 2012
The British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) is proud to present a talk accompanying the successful exhibition The Post Office in Pictures. On 7 June, BPMA Archivist Martin Devereux will explore the origins on the BPMA Photographic Archive and the range of images chosen for the exhibition.
The talk will look at the role of the photographs in the growth of Public Relations in the GPO in the 1930s, in particular how the photo unit worked in the production of the Post Office Magazine and showing examples of the work they produced – posters and photos as well tell some stories which illustrate the way in which the department operated.
The birth of the modern library in the 1960s will be highlighted, as well as the role played by Peter Howe and Anne Fitzgerald. This will concentrate on the changing nature of service, the role of commercial photographers, the relocations and the eventual close of the library in the 1990s.
Martin will also show some of his favourite images used in the gallery exhibition, and talk about the work that’s being done to catalogue them and put them online.
