Culture and Diversity at The British Postal Museum & Archive
22 July 2011
On 13th August, The British Postal Museum & Archive invites you to an Archive Open Day on the theme Culture and Diversity, with display, talks and exclusive behind-the-scene tours.
The day will showcase works made by the Post Office and BT Art Club, and the group will be there to discuss the work of the club.
The 105 year old Art Club is the last remaining link between the Post Office and BT; they meet and paint once a month and have one exhibition per year.
There will also be a display featuring records relating to the 1968 and 1977 Race Relations Act as well as files relating to postal packets addressed in the Irish language. Mail addressed in Gaelic was translated at the earliest stage of circulation, a position unpopular with the Gaelic League who was seeking to promote the use of the Irish language. The files date from 1900 to 1960 and contain details of the numerous questions raised in Parliament about the position, as well as media cuttings.
Additional exhibits will include files relating to local datestamps and how these tied in with issues of local identity.
The day will also feature exclusive behind-the-scene tours of the BPMA Archive.
Helen Dafter, Archivist at The British Postal Museum & Archive said:
“Royal Mail has a long history of employing a diverse workforce and serving a large and varied customer base. The company has also boasted a number of social and recreational groups throughout the years and the BPMA are delighted to have the oldest of these groups represented at the Open Day”
