Doctor Who

Doctor Who is instantly recognisable for its well known theme tune, iconic tardis, frightening Daleks and, of course, the enigmatic Doctor.

The first episode was aired on 23 November 1963. Originally intended to be both educational and for family viewing, it starred a Time Lord - the Doctor - travelling in a time machine (a 1950s police box!) fighting against evil, alien villains. The programme caused controversy at times due to the frightening nature of the villains, the most memorable of which were the Daleks - depicted in this stamp.

The cult TV show has become a significant part of British popular culture and is the longest running science fiction TV series in the world. The original series ran from 1963 until 1989, then there was no new series until 2005. The modern series is equally as popular with the British public and is now aired in many different countries worldwide.

The stamp below is from The Entertainers' Tale issue from June 1999.
