The Associations
Many different cultural, religious, social and sports clubs and
associations operate within Mount Pleasant Mail Centre. For this
project the BPMA worked with three religious groups, but some of the
many other groups include the Ghanaian Association, Filipino
Association, Nigerian Association, Jamaica Society, Christian
Association, and other sports and social clubs. These are mainly set up
and run by the workers themselves. The groups often have committees and
organise social events, competitions and activities throughout the year.
The
BPMA chose to work with the Hindu, Sikh and Muslim Associations as all
of these groups were very keen to get involved. The BPMA was also
lacking in material representing any of these Associations. The
majority of the members of these groups were also born in India,
Pakistan and Africa, and so had migrated to the UK at some point in
their lives.
The other groups in Mount Pleasant, and in other
offices, should not be forgotten, and the BPMA would like to work with
them in the future to ensure that they are also represented in the
collection.
