Launched by the influential Sir Stephen Tallents, a galaxy of artists including Edward Ardizzone, Margaret Calkin James and Rex Whistler were commissioned to illustrate messages of good tidings and congratulations to end the popular superstition that receiving a telegram meant bad news.
